Brian Stevens
It is with sadness that ASCL reports the death of Brian Stevens on 13 October at the age of 79. He was the association's president from 1988-89, overseeing the move of headquarters from London to Leicester, and an active, longserving member.
Born in 1930, Brian was brought up in Northampton and educated at Northampton Grammar School. Following his National Service with the RAF in 1948, he went on to read geography at Leicester University. There he met his wife Carol who he married in 1956.
During his career he taught in Cheshire, Lancashire and Cambridgeshire and was head of Culcheth High School in Warrington from 1966-75 and Longsands School St Neots from 1975 to his retirement in 1993. Following his retirement from Longsands, Brian became a consultant for the association, advising schools on headship appointments and preparing schools around the country for Ofsted visits.
A keen sportsman throughout his life, he played county standard in both tennis and hockey. In his retirement he took up golf and was still an active player up to his death.
After Carol died in 2002, he continued to keep busy with Rotary and parish council, playing golf and investigating the family genealogy.
Our condolences go out to his son Jeremy, his daughter Judith and four grandchildren.
