Time to take action?
At last someone who shares a view on overhauling the academic calendar that I have been expounding for years - thank you Alison Saunders (Leader, February 2007).
The only part of the argument you missed out was the bit about post-results application for university which could be accommodated within your proposal. I defy anyone to convince me that there is very much academic progress going on at any level in July and I know for certain that whatever I have taught my year 12 students at this time has had to be done again in September.
Why can't schools be brave enough to go it alone when we know it is better for everyone - students and staff? Perhaps ASCL could help?

'Outstanding' consultancy
Last term I was successful in getting my first headship post. I would like to say that the process, which was overseen by one of ASCL's consultants, Harvey Black, was quite outstanding.
His calm reassurance and expert management of the process together with quality feedback to the successful and, I hear, the unsuccessful candidates was thoughtful and useful for future development.
I recently oversaw a headship process at a school where I am a governor - I wish I had known about consultancy services like this.
